Arab Regulators Network
Arab Network of Telecommunications and Information Technology Regulators (“AREGNET”)
The Arab Network of Telecommunications and Information Technology Regulators (“AREGNET”) was created on the occasion of the first conference of regulators of the Arab region, which was held in Algiers from 19 to 21 April 2003 and was attended by representatives of regulators, administrations from 15 Arab countries and the International Telecommunications Union (“ITU”).
Algeria was chosen to provide the permanent secretariat for AREGNET.
AREGNET is structured into three bodies, namely:
- General Assembly: defines strategy, action plans and processes membership applications;
- Presidency: which rotates according to alphabetical order, presides over the network until the next annual meeting and represents it at regional and international conferences;
- Permanent secretariat: is provided by the Regulatory Authority of Post and Electronic Communications (“ARPCE”) in Algeria and manages the day-to-day business of the network in coordination with the presidency.
Among AREGNET’s main objectives are the following:
- The exchange of experience and best practice in the regulation of telecommunications and information technologies,
- The development of policies and regulatory models to harmonise organisational practices in the Arab region,
- Coordinating the positions of Network member countries at regional and international conferences.
The member countries of the AREGNET network of Arab regulators are:
Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, Sudan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates.
